With Ya and Todavía No

Ya (already) and todavía no (not yet) often go with the pluperfect to show what was or wasn't done by a certain moment.

  • Cuando llegamos, la película ya había empezado. When we arrived, the film had already started.
  • Todavía no había terminado cuando me llamaste.I still hadn't finished when you called me.
In Latin America, the preterite is often used instead: Cuando llegué, ella ya salió. The pluperfect is still the clearer and more standard choice.
