Ser and estar both mean to be. Ser describes what something is. Estar describes how or where something is.

- Estoy médico.Soy médico.

Ser is not only for permanent things: Es joven and Es estudiante can change. Think of ser as what something is and estar as the state it is in.
The Same Adjective with Ser and Estar
Many adjectives work with both verbs. Ser gives a general description. Estar gives a state or how something seems right now.
- Es nervioso.He's a nervous person.
- Está nervioso.He's nervous right now.
- Es guapa.She's good-looking.
- Está guapa hoy.She looks great today.
- La sopa está fría.The soup is cold.

With Past Participles
Estar + participle describes a result. Ser + participle is the passive: something done by someone.
- La puerta está cerrada.The door is closed.
- La puerta fue cerrada por el guardia.The door was closed by the guard.
