Einführung
Das Present Continuous (auch Present Progressive) beschreibt Handlungen, die gerade jetzt (right now) oder im aktuellen Zeitraum stattfinden. Es wird mit am/is/are + der -ing-Form des Verbs gebildet.
Subjekt+am/is/are+Verb-ing
- I am reading a great book right now.
- Julia is working from home this week.
- They are building a new bridge nearby.
| Subjekt | Form |
|---|---|
| I | am working |
| He / She / It | is working |
| You / We / They | are working |
Verwendung des Present Continuous
Es geht nicht nur um genau diesen Moment:
| Verwendung | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| Handlung, die gerade jetzt geschieht | Shh! The baby is sleeping. |
| Vorübergehende Situation | I am staying with my parents this month. |
| Sich verändernde oder entwickelnde Situation | Prices are rising rapidly. |
| Feste Verabredung in der Zukunft | We are meeting tomorrow at 10. |
| Wiederholtes störendes Verhalten (mit always) | He is always losing his keys! |
Present Simple vs. Present Continuous
Die beiden Gegenwartsformen werden leicht verwechselt. Das Present Simple beschreibt dauerhafte Tatsachen und Gewohnheiten; das Present Continuous beschreibt vorübergehende oder andauernde Handlungen.
| Present Simple (dauerhaft/Gewohnheit) | Present Continuous (vorübergehend/jetzt) |
|---|---|
| She lives in London. | She is living with a host family this term. |
| He works at a hospital. | He is working overtime this week. |

Zustandsverben (keine Verlaufsform)
Bestimmte Zustandsverben (stative verbs) beschreiben Zustände statt Handlungen und werden normalerweise nicht in der Verlaufsform verwendet. Dazu gehören Verben des Denkens, des Fühlens, des Besitzes und der Wahrnehmung.
| Kategorie | Verben |
|---|---|
| Denken/Wissen | know, believe, understand, remember, think (= believe) |

| Wahrnehmung | see, hear, smell, taste, seem, appear |
