Introduction
The neutral Spanish word order is subject, verb, object, like English. But the subject is often dropped, and word order is more flexible than in English.
| structure | example |
|---|---|
| subject + verb + object | Juan come manzanas. (Juan eats apples.) |
| no subject | Como manzanas. (I eat apples.) |
| verb before subject | Llegó Juan. (Juan arrived.) |
| question | ¿Come Juan manzanas? (Does Juan eat apples?) |
| negative | Juan no come manzanas. (Juan doesn't eat apples.) |
Spanish has no helper verb like English do: questions and negatives use the main verb directly.
