Introduction
A noun's gender and number spread to the words around it. Articles, adjectives, possessives and demonstratives all change to match the noun.
| word | masculine | feminine |
|---|---|---|
| article | le chat, un ami | la chatte, une amie |
| adjective | un chat noir | une chatte noire |
| possessive | mon frère | ma sœur |
| demonstrative | ce garçon | cette fille |
- Le petit chat noir dort.
- La petite chatte noire dort.
Number Agreement
In the plural, the article becomes les or des, and the noun and adjectives usually add -s.
article+noun+adjective, all in the same gender and number

Past Participles with Être
With être, the past participle agrees with the subject like an adjective.
- Il est parti. Elle est partie.
- Ils sont arrivés. Elles sont arrivées.
- Ma sœur est parti tôt.Ma sœur est partie tôt.
Many of these endings are silent. Grand and grande sound different, but noir and noire sound the same. Agreement still matters in writing.
