Introduction
An unreal conditional describes something imagined. For the present, use si + imparfait with the conditionnel.
si+imparfait, conditionnel
- Si j'avais plus de temps, je voyagerais plus.If I had more time, I would travel more.
- Si elle gagnait au loto, elle achèterait une maison. If she won the lottery, she would buy a house.
- Si j'étais toi, je partirais.If I were you, I would leave.
- Si je travaillerais, je réussirais.Si je travaillais, je réussirais.
The Past
For something that didn't happen, use si + plus-que-parfait with the conditionnel passé. The conditionnel passé is avoir or être in the conditionnel plus a past participle.
si+plus-que-parfait, conditionnel passé
- Si j'avais su, je serais venu.If I had known, I would have come.
- Si tu avais étudié, tu aurais réussi. If you had studied, you would have passed.
- Si j'aurais su, je serais venu.Si j'avais su, je serais venu.
- Si j'avais su, je serai venu.Si j'avais su, je serais venu.
All Three Types
| type | example |
|---|---|
| possible | Si je travaille, je réussis. |
| imagined now | Si je travaillais, je réussirais. |
| imagined past | Si j'avais travaillé, j'aurais réussi. |
Each step moves one tense further into the past: présent imparfait plus-que-parfait in the si clause.
