Introduction
Coordinating conjunctions join two words or two clauses of equal importance. The word order doesn't change after them.
| conjunction | meaning | example |
|---|---|---|
| e | and | Mangio pasta e pane. |
| ma | but | Vorrei venire, ma sono stanco. |
| però | but, though | È caro, però è bello. |
| o, oppure | or | Vuoi tè o caffè? |
| quindi, perciò | so | Piove, quindi resto a casa. |
| infatti | in fact, indeed | Era stanco. Infatti è andato a letto. |
| anzi | in fact, on the contrary | Non è brutto, anzi, è bellissimo. |
Ma and Però
Ma and però both mean "but". Ma always comes at the start of its clause. Però can also come at the end, where it has a softer meaning, like English "though".
- È bello. Costa troppo, però.It's nice. It costs too much, though.
Pairs
Some conjunctions come in pairs, with one part before each of the things being connected.
| pair | meaning | example |
|---|---|---|
| sia ... sia, sia ... che | both ... and | Sia Marco sia Anna sono venuti. |
| né ... né | neither ... nor | Né Marco né Anna sono venuti. |
| o ... o | either ... or | O vieni o resti. |
When né ... né comes after the verb, the verb also needs non in front of it: Non bevo né caffè né tè.
- Non mi piace né il tè né il caffè.I like neither tea nor coffee.
- Mi piace né il tè né il caffè.Non mi piace né il tè né il caffè.
