Introduction
To make a sentence negative, put non directly before the verb. If the verb has object pronouns in front of it, non goes before the pronouns.
non+(pronoun)+verb
- Non mangio carne.I don't eat meat.
- Non lo so.I don't know.
- Non l'ho visto.I didn't see him.
- Lo non so.Non lo so.
Double Negatives
Negative words such as niente (nothing), nessuno (nobody), mai (never), più (no longer) and neanche (not even) go after the verb, with non before it. In English this would be a double negative, but in Italian it's the correct and normal pattern: Non vedo nessuno (I don't see anybody).
| negative | meaning | example |
|---|---|---|
| non ... niente, nulla | nothing | Non ho niente. |
| non ... nessuno | nobody | Non conosco nessuno. |
| non ... mai | never | Non vado mai al cinema. |
| non ... più | no longer | Non fumo più. |
| non ... neanche | not even | Non ho neanche un euro. |
| non ... ancora | not yet | Non ho ancora mangiato. |
- Ho niente.Non ho niente.
When the Negative Word Comes First
If nessuno, niente or mai comes before the verb, non is dropped: Nessuno è venuto. (Nobody came.)
- Nessuno lo sa.Nobody knows.
- Non lo sa nessuno.Nobody knows.
- Nessuno non lo sa.Nessuno lo sa.
