Basic Word Order

French · Sentence Structure

Introduction

The basic order is subject, verb, object, as in English.

  • Le professeur explique la leçon.The teacher explains the lesson.
  • Nous aimons ce restaurant. We like this restaurant.
  • La leçon le professeur explique.Le professeur explique la leçon.

Pronouns and Adverbs

Object pronouns go before the verb. Short adverbs go right after it.

subject+object pronoun+verb+adverb+rest

  • Nous l'aimons beaucoup.We like it a lot.
  • Elle me parle souvent. She often talks to me.
  • Nous aimons le beaucoup.Nous l'aimons beaucoup.
  • Elle souvent me parle.Elle me parle souvent.

Peut-être at the Start

At the start of a sentence, peut-être is usually followed by que. In formal writing, it can be followed by inversion instead. Putting peut-être after the verb avoids both.

  • Peut-être qu'il viendra.Maybe he'll come.
  • Peut-être viendra-t-il.Perhaps he will come. Formal.
  • Il viendra peut-être.He might come.
In casual speech you will also hear Peut-être il viendra, but avoid it in writing.
