Conditionnel

French · Tenses

Introduction

The conditionnel means "would". It uses the future stem with the imparfait endings.

future stem+-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

tuparleraisseraispourrais
il, elle, onparleraitseraitpourrait
nousparlerionsserionspourrions
vousparleriezseriezpourriez
ils, ellesparleraientseraientpourraient

Je parlerai (future) and je parlerais (conditional) sound almost the same. The -s makes the difference in writing.

  • Demain, je parlerai au directeur.Tomorrow I will talk to the director.
  • À ta place, je parlerais au directeur. If I were you, I would talk to the director.

Polite Requests and Advice

  • Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît.I'd like a coffee, please.
  • Pourriez-vous m'aider ?Could you help me?
  • Tu devrais te reposer. You should rest.
  • On pourrait aller au cinéma.We could go to the cinema.

Hypotheses

The conditionnel gives the result of an imagined situation. The si part takes the imparfait, never the conditionnel.

si+imparfait, conditionnel

  • Si j'avais plus de temps, je voyagerais plus.If I had more time, I would travel more.
  • Si j'aurais plus de temps, je voyagerais.Si j'avais plus de temps, je voyagerais.
When si means "whether", the conditional is fine after it: Je me demande s'il viendrait. (I wonder whether he would come.)
