Introduction
The présent describes what happens now, habits and general facts. French has no separate "-ing" form, so je travaille means both "I work" and "I'm working".
- Je travaille dans une banque.I work in a bank.
- Il pleut.It's raining.
- L'eau bout à 100 degrés.Water boils at 100 degrees.
- Je suis travaille.Je travaille.
- Je suis travaillant.Je travaille.
To stress that something is happening right now, use être en train de: Je suis en train de travailler.
Depuis + Présent
For something that started in the past and is still going on, French uses the présent with depuis. English uses "have been" or "have done".
présent+depuis+time
- J'habite ici depuis trois ans.I've lived here for three years.
- Elle apprend le français depuis 2020.She has been learning French since 2020.
- Tu attends depuis longtemps ?Have you been waiting long?
- J'ai habité ici depuis trois ans.J'habite ici depuis trois ans.
Near Future and Storytelling
The présent can also describe a planned future event, and it can make a story about the past feel more vivid.
- Je pars demain.I'm leaving tomorrow.
- En 1789, le peuple prend la Bastille. In 1789, the people take the Bastille.
