Introduction
English often uses one past tense where French needs two. The passé composé tells what happened. The imparfait describes what was going on around it.
| passé composé | imparfait |
|---|---|
| a finished event | a situation in progress |
| moves the story forward | sets the scene |
| what happened | what was happening, what it was like |
| a single or counted action | a habit |
- Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. It was raining when I went out.
Interrupted Actions
The imparfait gives the action in progress. The passé composé gives the event that interrupted it.
imparfait+quand+passé composé
- Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- Ils regardaient la télé quand nous sommes arrivés.They were watching TV when we arrived.
- Je dormais quand le téléphone sonnait.Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.
Signal Words
| often passé composé | often imparfait |
|---|---|
| hier, soudain, tout à coup | tous les jours, souvent, d'habitude |
| un jour, une fois, trois fois | autrefois, à cette époque |
| pendant deux heures | pendant que |
- Soudain, il a crié.Suddenly, he shouted.
- Tous les jours, je prenais le bus.Every day, I took the bus.
- Quand j'étais petit, j'ai joué dehors tous les jours.Quand j'étais petit, je jouais dehors tous les jours.
Ask whether the action is a single event with an end, or a background or habit. The first takes the passé composé, the second the imparfait.
