Introduction
The trapassato prossimo corresponds to English "had done". It's used when you're already talking about the past and want to show that something happened even earlier. It's formed with the imperfetto of avere or essere plus the past participle.
avere / essere in the imperfetto+past participle
- Quando sono arrivato, il treno era già partito. When I arrived, the train had already left.
- Avevo già mangiato quando mi hai chiamato.I'd already eaten when you called.
The choice between avere and essere is the same as in the passato prossimo, and so is the agreement of the participle with essere.
